Why does Poseidon hate Odysseus?

The sea does not pursue Odysseus by accident. It carries the anger of a divine father, awakened by a victory signed too loudly.

Poseidon hates Odysseus because Odysseus blinded Polyphemus, his son.

In the cave, Odysseus survives through the perfect trick: he calls himself Nobody.

But once safe, he shouts his true name to the Cyclops.

Polyphemus can then pray to Poseidon and ask for revenge.

The fault is not only the wound. It is the claimed name, the pride that turns escape into provocation.

From that moment, Odysseus' wandering becomes a debt owed to the sea.

Polyphemus: surviving the cave

Odysseus and his men enter the cave of Polyphemus. Hospitality, the sacred rule of the Greek world, collapses at once: the giant eats several companions. Direct strength is useless. Odysseus must wait, intoxicate, prepare the stake, blind, then escape hidden beneath the rams.

The trick is brilliant because it rests on language. When Polyphemus calls the other Cyclopes, he says that Nobody attacks him. The false name becomes a shield.

The word that ruins victory

Odysseus could leave without an address. Instead, from the ship, he reveals his identity: Odysseus, son of Laertes, king of Ithaca. That cry gives revenge a target and turns a local escape into a long curse.

The scene holds the tragedy of the character. Odysseus knows better than anyone how to disappear, but he also wants glory to carry his name. His intelligence saves him; his pride lengthens the disaster.

Divine vengeance and wandering

Polyphemus asks Poseidon to break the return: let Odysseus come home late, after great losses, on a foreign ship, and find trouble in his house. The rest of the poem largely fulfils the curse. The companions die, the fleet disappears, Ithaca is occupied.

Poseidon is therefore not only "the god of the sea." He is the mythological name of consequences. Every storm recalls that a badly held victory can outlive the battle itself.
